Let's find a solution instead of arguing weather it is rich or lean.......bottom line Flood's 147 isn't running right.

All internal combustion engines need 3 things to run: air, fuel and spark. Let's start with air-
When was the last time the air filter (and pre filter) cleaned ?
How old is the air filter?
How does it run with the filter off?
I would try cleaning the pre filter if equip first. One thing I found is todays filters are clean by tapping them on a hard surface.....compress air doesn't work very well.
Another area to check is the bolts holding the carb on.....sometimes they work loose.

Fuel
How old is your fuel?
Where do you buy your fuel (gas station of bulk tank)?
When was the last time the fuel filter was change?
Do you shut off the fuel and let carb run dry when you are done using your tractor for the day?
Where do you store you fuel-damp or dry place?
Straight gas or gas with ethanol?
Do you use a fuel stabilizer?
Is your fuel container sealable? do you seal tank after you fill up tractor?
Does your fuel container sit on the floor?
Do you shake the fuel container before you add fuel to your tractor?
Do you use Marvel Mystery Oil?

Spark
How old is your sparkplug?
What brand and part number?
Gap?
How does the spark look on the business end? (picture would be helpful)
Sparkplug wire-
How old?
Wire fits tight on plug?
How does the terminal end look?
Do you have a sparkplug test light? A cheap inline one works great. How does the coil end of the plug wire and coil look?
How old is your battery? Full charge?

Something is not set right since the runs on choke......It maybe a simple thing or several things.

Merk, That was a great and very helpful write up. Much better than all of the arguing and so on that a few others got into. I thought the point of this forum is to help each other out not fight over who is correct. Anyways here is my experience with a carb issue I had on my 100. From time to time it would not run right with out choking it. I started by soaking the carb in carb cleaner and rebuilding it and also cleaning the fuel tank and sediment bowl. It ran for a short time and went back to acting up again. Again removed the carb cleaned and inspected, did not find any dirt etc so I put it back to together and still same issue. I got fed up and swapped the carb from my 127 and it ran fine. I ended up buying a replacement carb on evilbay and it has ran fine every since. This was cheaper than buying a new throttle shaft and bushings, a float and carb kit to try to repair the old carb. To Flood, check out your throttle shaft for play then decide what course of action to take. Good luck.

Thanks for the complement.

You had a great point on the throttle shaft......There was one thing missing in my write up and it was the throttle shaft being loose.

My 100 has a Carter carb on it. Not sure if your 100 has a Carter carb. The throttle shaft for the Carter carb is NLA. I have modified a Kohler throttle shaft and made it work.

Every used carb that I buy gets rebuilt before I use it. I keep a spare rebuild kit, float and throttle shaft kit in my spare carb parts.
