mpfeiffer - BINGO! Maybe you are onto something. Here is a schematic for a 1914. In this schematic I see a FRONT PTO Switch, a REAR PTO Switch and a PTO Power Switch. This sounds like just the ticket. Let us know how this fits your 982.

mpfeiffer and Frank - Thanks...this looks promising, I will print out the 1914 wiring diagram and trace my 982's wires.

This is interesting..... I double checked the wiring diagram for the 1912/14 and while it does show 3 switches, the parts book only lists 2. The 1912/14 is the ONLY tractor that it shows these odd switches for. I will dig deeper....

Well.... after scouring parts pages, electrical diagrams and service manuals, there seems to be quite a few discrepancies between all sources.
Near as I can tell, the "official" wiring diagrams are correct. The service manual has incorrect part numbers identifying the PTO switches, and the parts books do not list all necessary switches. This is likely because of the very short run of these machines produced. Here is what I have deducted, and I cannot guarantee it to be correct as there are so many discrepancies between the books, but I strongly believe it is: IF you have a 982 with serial number 744,200 and ABOVE, (1912/14's would fall into this category) then there appears to be 3 switches necessary if it has a rear PTO. 1.) The main dash mounted switch, part number 925-0893 2.) Two non specifically mounted switches, part number 925-3022 Both set of switches are still available from CCC. The switch schematic for the 925-3022 switch is as follows: It is a 5 pole, two position switch. On = A+B Off= B+E and C+D IF you have a 982 with serial number 744,199 and BELOW it needs only two switches: 1.) Dash mounted switch, part number 925-0893 2.) Second switch mounted below and right of the ignition switch, also part number 925-0893. Later, they started yet ANOTHER switch set up beginning on the 18/2072 and continuing through all other SGT machines with rear PTO. It uses: 1.) Dash mounted switch, part number 925-0893 2.) Second switch, mounted below and to the right of the ignition switch, that is a simple 3 position toggle switch. Part number, 725-3135 but is NLA from CCC, but is a ON-OFF-ON toggle switch and can be purchased at most part stores. I do apologize to the OP for my frustration at the beginning, as we have not ever ran across this before. The 1912/14 models and this odd switch set up has never came across my path, or to my knowledge has it come up on this site. Hopefully, we will learn something new. I know I just did. |

That clears a lot up Jonathan. Now it looks like the owners manual did not cover anything about operation of the rear and front PTO and associated switches. Did you happen to run across anything of the like while doing that great research?

I have thought a bit about how that 1914 pto system used to work. If I remember right, the switch on the dash by the key selected which pto would be engaged. It would only allow power to travel to one switch at a time. I think it had to be down for front and up for rear. I also seem to remember (could be wrong on this) that all 3 switches had to be in the down position to start the tractor.

Thanks...my 982's serial number is 744,245. Perhaps there was a bulletin or owner's manual supplement, that covered this three-switch configuration?

Awesome, thanks. It's funny the owners manual I got with the tractor (that the PO said came with it originally) was not this version, but it could have been a replacement manual, who knows. Now my mystery is solved.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
