I fired up the more intact 2185 and it runs good. The muffler has a hole in it though. It has about 1000 hours on the clock, so I will pull the engine and covers, clean it up, and I will probably replace the seals and valve cover gaskets for good measure, and then sell it. The 46" deck that came with it has a big hole in the front, so it's worthless, except for spindles maybe. The other engine is missing a starter, and the tractor is missing a battery and ignition switch. So I haven't run it, but it has 55 hours on the clock. That can't hardly be right, but the engine does look really clean, the tractor not so much. So I don't know if that number is accurate. I can't hardly believe someone put 55 hours on it and left it sit to rot. I will go over that engine too and I might salt that one away for my own use another time.

One out of two ain't too bad for the price. The one engine runs good. The PO said it wasn't running right because he thought he ran it low on oil, and it had a knock. Well on closer inspection the full side valve cover had a crack in it. So I pulled it off and the rod for the lifter popped off. I put it back together and swapped over the cover from the other engine and it fired right up and sounds good.
The other tractor he got to swap the engine over and never got around to it. It turned out to be full of water and some rust and is a mess inside, so I don't know if it will clean up. Right now it's stripped to the block but I can't get the PTO off because it's rusted right. It's soaking with some blue torch wd40 overnight. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
