I agree with all posters above.
some of the newer regulators while having the same terminal location, are not hooked to the same internal parts.
Sooo you have to make sure the terminal on the reg is marked,
then that you have connected them to the correct wires.
Don't just go by where reg. terminals are located physically.
"B" to batt.
"G" to Gen or armature "A" terminal(can be stamped either on Starter/Gen.)
(G is not ground)
"F" to field (Smallest terminal on starter/generator)
Well you get the pix,
And like working on vehicles, you never know what the last well meaning "mechanic" did or hooked up incorrectly.
Assume nothing.
Let us know what you find.
(It's normal for amp gauge to show heavy discharge while cranking)

Definitely sounds like voltage regulator not being wired properly, or having a stuck cutout relay in the VR. I think both of those things will cause what you describe.

Also, be aware that some of the off-brand VRs are set for like 14.7 volts from the factory, which to me is a little hot. You can adjust them by changing the spring tension on the field coil in the VR (tighter = higher voltage, less tight = lower voltage). Also, I believe the original VRs regulated on both current and voltage, while the newer ones seem to be just voltage.

Smile Cu Cadet 128 starting issues

V/R , took a known good one off another cub, stuck it on and all is good. Was headed that direction but not sure. Came on here for assistance and a 2nd opinion. Thanks all for your help !!

Does that mean it was a stuck VR or was it miss wired?

Really curious as to how it gets stuck after being removed from another tractor with no power to it. Then engages itself and becomes stuck when powered up again. Just seems odd.

Not saying I dont believe it.. Just never seen a new one get stuck on first try.

I dont know it all. But I know brand new coils dont just get stuck. It takes more than just hooking up the VR correctly to make it fail.

I've not replaced hundreds of these like some guys here but i have replaced 4 in the last 18 months and repaired an original one. I get how they work.

Edit.. Lol and Jmech really gets how they work.
