Well the paint could of been clear coated over.
Why does it have an aluminum rear but the hood says "international"
I'd be suspicious it is a repo or clone, have to see it in person, as others have said

I agree with ol'George--skepticism.

I own a 1980 (IH) and a 1983 (MTD) 782. Both have solid steel, flat cover plates on the rear end. I don't know what others have, but those are the ones I have and don't think anyone has replaced them.

The other thing I base my skepticism on is the hubcaps. The "IH" logo is missing from the hubcaps. If not mistaken, when MTD started making these units, the hub caps were plain chrome without a logo. My 1983 only has hub caps on the rear.

See pics below for comparison.

Aside from that, yes, it's a very nice 782. And you would spend about that much on a brand new LAWN MOWER from a big box store. At least here you're getting a bone fide GARDEN TRACTOR.

Great points all! I noticed the diff cover after posting, sorry for putting it in the wrong forum. Looks like somebody is flipping it and the previous seller isn't happy. https://hartford.craigslist.org/grd/...960533257.html

The plot thickens!

Wow! Sure looks like the PO is chapped. A $1500 price tag would be a better price for sure.

I have a 1984 784 and it has International on the hood. It was my understanding, that on the red 82 series, it was the agreement between IH & CCC that international would appear to the end of that series.

IIRC that "international" did not appear on the Y&W 82 series.

That is not a 1980 machine with the black front axle, dash tower and aluminum rear. It also has the large CCC serial tag.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
