Ok to finalize the metaphor that some of my quick-witted colleagues have brought up, I found the root of the problem. (and as usual with this machine, yet another snafu has surfaced so I have yet another question).
After I hit the root I tried to start which was a no-go. I took the belt off the PTO and moved the blades which turned freely, so I assumed it had to be another problem. After reading through the comments I decided to start from scratch and remove the deck and start reviewing from the ground up. As you can see in the attached photo, what I immediately discovered was that the deck collided with the root pushing the middle deck back far enough to prevent the blade from turning. Lesson learned. The blade would indeed turn, however, just far enough to lure me into thinking it wasn't the problem. I changed the belts, greased all the fittings and installed a brand new PTO. I don't know the history of the PTO and decided better now than later. I started and tried to engage the PTO and on the first 5 attempts, she sputtered and died. The 6th attempt was a put, put, put and little better and on the 7th, she actually engaged and ran like a champ. So is this "stalling while engaging" a voltage issue, ie..potentially a weak battery or possibly the symptom of something else? |

A. New PTO's require a break-in procedure, which is similar to what you just did, so might be OK now.
B. PTO air gap should be .017". Did you check it? C. Do the mule drive pulleys turn freely. D. Is the engine warmed up when you are engaging the PTO? E. Do you have the throttle (engine rpm) up before engaging the PTO? F. With the PTO belt removed does it still stall? |

I hope you took your sledge hammer and straightened the deck properly before you tried to use it.

Morning and thank you.............yes straightened out the deck but didn't need a sledge, just used a pipe wrench as the metal is almost as pliable as lead...
Also, yes to all except F. which I am going to test today. UPDATE Rechecked and verified the .017 gap and all good Removed the main drive belt Rechecked the belt on the blades and the belt and blades spin freely Started and let warm up and then engaged the PTO...PTO engaged successfully with only a very slight squeak Before I reinstalled the main drive belt, I checked ALL drive belt pulleys and they ALL turn freely. Reinstalled drive belt and checked tension on belt. (This time I left the belt "slightly" looser (maybe 2 turns of the adjuster) than the previous install just to see if it matters). Cranked it up, engaged the PTO and she engaged fine. All good now and I am going to stop typing before my luck runs out. Thanks to all of you who made meaningful and productive comments. |
