Got into this issue today.
Removed the grill and hood to access the front of the engine. Removed the belt from the PTO. It appears to be seized as the pulley will not spin freely, which it should, with the engine off and the wires disconnected. |

Both front and rear bearings in the PTO are shot.

Can they be replaced or did MTD make it so you have to buy it new?

Got it apart.'
the rear one is staked in the housing, just had to use a drift and a bigger hammer is all! The front came out easily The front is a 6206 DU and the rear is a 6006 DU8A MTD wants $333 for their PTO and I found one on the bay for $149 The bearings should run about $40 total I'm estimating from the prices I saw on the bay |

That's great.
Here's the cheap crap I would use. https://www.ebay.com/itm/30284862130...Cclp%3A2334524 https://www.ebay.com/itm/30285338378...Cclp%3A2334524 For less than $10 your up and running again. ![]() But if you're stuck on name brand stuff..... https://www.ebay.com/itm/14396926332...UAAOSwCHVgPs7D https://www.ebay.com/itm/16301488077...IAAOSworNb7uNO I've never had one of the el'cheapo bearings fail yet but if it's hard to get to I would use the SKF ones.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
