You could sand the plates flat but I bet that would take forever.

Are you sure the rear pin on the coupler wasn't broken? Does the driveshaft turn when you release the clutch?

Was the coupler at the end of driveshaft properly pinned to the input shaft of the transmission? It looks like there's some galling and the coupler was just free spinning on the input shaft.

And the bolt used to pin the coupler to driveshaft is not recommended. Spirol pins are recommended for the coupler to driveshaft and input shaft.

Looks like the stub shaft on the tranny is broken off. Time for some transmission work, remove, repair, replace reinstall...

When I got it, no it was not bolted. My guess is that it was bolted at one time and twisted/broke it right off.

Darkminion_17 very likely made the correct call that input shaft is toasted. It looked like it to me but I wasn't so sure. It sure does look messed up and short (broken off).

regarding the drive shaft, what would be a good replacement for the collar that has the bolt in it? Or is the one I have fine( replacing the bolt with a new spring coil pin of course)

I would take a good look at the inside of the coupler with the
bolt in it. As strange as the tranny output looks I would think
that coupler is toast. You can click on the cub parts lookup at the
top of the home page here and get a part #for the coupler and then
go elsewhere to buy the part if it is bad.

I have a 124 sitting on the bench and output shaft of the tranny
measures around .83 from the seal. From the outer edge of the
shaft to center of pin hole is about .25 if that helps.

As far as sanding the pressure plates. I have done that just to clean
them up but as said it would take forever to true them up that way.
Unless they are warped you are probably ok on that.

This is your problem part, called reduction drive.
#24 on the drawing, p/n 717-3073.
You will probably need 18, 19, & 20 also.
The coupler and drive shaft can be gotten from Parts By Jeff at the top of the page.

In the midst of replacing the input shaft on my 126 I have discovered that the needle bearing(PN 941-0362) is no longer serviceable. Does anyone know a source for one that isn’t for Cub Cadet? Because they want $99 for it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
