I have seen that online where people say adjusting the timing to 18 instead of 20 fixes it the rattle. I'll look into it

My 149 makes so many friggin' noises that I gave up worryn' about them.
But that was 15 years ago. Still starts & runs fine, and does the job. Sometimes searchin' for the devil brings more agony than bliss. ![]() |

I checked the point gap and it was correct at .020 but the contacts were severely worn and concave. I replaced the points and condenser since the seller provided a new set. Engine still sounds the same. It's somewhere between a knock and a rattle, almost like something inside is loose/wobbling. She definitely needs a rebuild as I suspect this is all original from 1966.
Side note, now the carb is leaking. I replaced the bowl gasket and it was fine for a while, now it's leaking out the throat which means the float is stuck. Gimme a break... |

If you've ever been around an old Harley you would've heard the same noise. Solid valve lifters are a major contributor to the "KOHLER RATTLE". More noticable at idle/low rpm.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
