If you are planning to use AUX hydro port for PS in conjunction with lift cylinder, you will need T- adapter for return (low pressure) line.

Default Power steering...

If any members have ideas as to how to make this work on a 1641, please chime in. I'm not sure if the hydro pump on a 1641 has an aux out to use for the steering.

My plan was just to use the send line (from the lift valve) going to the power steering unit inlet first with a return line to the hydro. The aux from the power steering unit would then go to the lift valve with the return from the lift valve tee-ing into the return line from the steering unit that is already connected to the pump. The R and L hoses going to the steering cylinder. Hopefully there will be enough pressure to make this work. Steering might be a little weak if using the lift valve at the same time.

With any luck I will be able to couple some of the existing steel hydraulic lines which have some tight bends to make this work.

If my ideas don't sound quite right, please let me know what you think needs to be changed. Help from the members is always appreciated!

Default Powersteering...

Oak, I think one additional line with 2 sharp bends, that connects to the power steering unit is missing. Should be 3 lines with sharp 180 degree bends connecting to the steering unit in total.

Thanks!

I'm looking for that line on the right side of Oak's picture if anyone has one available.

I think the Gerotor on the 1641 might be too small to handle power steering. The Gerotor on the 3000 series looks to be more robust. I wonder if the 3000 Gerotor could be fit onto the 1641 Hydro?
I have seen Hydros from the power steering equipped tractors sell for reasonable prices lately. Maybe one of them and a custom drive shaft.

Another option would be to get a sunstrand rear end from an 1864 or an 1862 with the drive shaft. That would be a direct fit to the 1641 frame. I'm not too familiar with the 3000 series machines to know if anything from them would work on my 1641. Perhaps other members might have additional information on this.

Frank, is there any way to test the flow of the pump on a 1641 to see if power steering is a viable option for my hard steer problem without changing the pump?

I added aux hydraulic connectors to the front for an implement and an additional valve when I restored this 1641. Would it be possible to check the flow by connecting up some lines and a flow device for reading GPM to the front hydraulic connectors?

What kind of device would be used to measure the GPM output of the pump?

Just to let you know, the 1641 does not list a power steering option in the parts list, so you need to find a rear with a sunstrand ported pump. Maybe skinny tires like on a 70, then have the rims accept a 1" bearing. Cheaper than adding power steering.

A watch with second hand is a good device, you are looking for GPM --gallon per minute.
Hook up a hose to one of your ports, nothing fancy as you are not building pressure.
Put a clean quart jar in a clean 5 gallon bucket bucket, and count how many seconds it takes to fill the quart jar, then do the math.
no need for a fancy flow meter.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
