If he insists on it being a rear PTO. Then ask him to engage and disengage it ( turn it on or off ). Or print the install instructions out and take them with you.

Also I would be questioning him on the HP and deck size. If he can't come up with a good reason for misrepresenting them then I would low ball him and start walking away.

So, that output shaft will not turn by turning on the switch?
I do like this tractor, but it's not worth anywhere near what he is asking. I'll be sure to check out the mower deck model # when I go back.

No, that's the back end of the transmission input shaft. It turns anytime the engine is running.

Heck, Matt....is your 782D for sale? That would make things so much easier for me. lol
Oh, and another thing....this is not an International Cub Cadet, right? Is it an MTD model?
Thanks for all the help, Matt and Jbollis.
I will probably make him an offer, low as it may be.

Nope, 782D is definitely not for sale...hehe. Actually, I'm casually looking for another diesel...I used to have a 1512 as well, and I wish I hadn't sold it.

The 1572 is an MTD-built machine.

I didn't even pay close to 3 grand for my 1572 and it's in great shape. Like matt said plan on dumping some money into it. It sounds like the PO doesn't know much which means you'll probably have to redo the drivetrain, replace fuel lines, filters, glow plugs etc...

Aagitch,
Do you like your 1572? Does it have any shortcomings? How is the power? Anything I can learn about them is appreciated.

I love it. Especially plowing with it. I guess the only shortcoming I can think of is maybe starting it when it's really cold out. I haven't had a problem but it doesn't get as cold down here. I've heard the starter upgrade and glow plug mod helps alot. I haven't done either of those but I do have new glow plugs in it. Tomorrow I'm installing the coolant heater for it.

As for price, I got a 1572 a couple months ago at auction for $1600. It is a pretty nice tractor and it came with a #450 48" snow blower, a 50GT deck and a 52 or 54 inch I believe Haben blade. Also got the wheel weights and chains and manuals at the above price.

I have owned a 1772 diesel with the 54" deck for the past 18 years. Both the tractor and deck are built very well. As far as a price it all depends on the condition. If both are truly in excellant condition I would think 2500 is fair.
I would check things over very carefuly as repairs are expensive even if you do your own repair work. I would deduct any repairs needed from the selling price. just my .02 worth. Diesels can be a pain but I love mine.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
