I did a little research and found out that "a" in the model number refers to the type of oil pan it has, the "q" stand for quiet series, and the "s" stand for electric start, I hope that helps.

my jd 112 has a k301 with a small flywheel and the stator/starter type system. none of the jd garden tractors to my knowledge had starter generators. i dont know why some manufactures used one and others used the other type? personally i kind of like starter generator type. they are so quiet. the gear/pinon starter is kind of loud "grind for me".

Starter/gen combos have been around a long long time.
(IIRR pre 1920 Dodge had a 18 Volt starter/generator combo)
Perm magnet starters are a relatively newer design and have become cost effective, as they have less weight and less copper wire.
With the advent of solid state regulators/rectifiers the P.M. system became more economical to produce, with less weight, and charges @ a lower rpm. due to the fact it is a ac flywheel alternator rectified to d.c.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
