Don’t overlook that condenser either! If weird stuff is happening that would be my first place to look and first part to change

Update:
So I ordered and changed the carb. Still not the ticket. Took the points cover off and checked and adjusted to .020. Just doesn’t seem to be consistent spark at points. Changed out spark plug. Same. Think coil or condenser ? Think when it last ran and then back fired shutting it down could have knocked timing out of whack?

I think I would try the things mentioned above. 1. Roland's suggestion which is ground side of coil.

2. Condenser. A few people mentioned this. Check ground first though.

I wouldn’t call it very consistent.

Just run jumper from neg side of coil to ground ? Then try starting?

No! Won't run that way. It's like taking the points away (or not opening). Roland was specifically speaking of running a jumper from negative of battery to ground on the motor.... this is to determine if you have grounding issues.

I think you misunderstood me Joe. I wasn't asking you, I was quoting you.

I've heard people say that before about poor spark at the points and I don't get it.

You're not suppose to have spark at the points. That's what the condenser does (if it's working properly). It reduces or eliminates spark at the points. Sparking means pitting, not good.

Well after a carb, condenser, cleaning points, and the problem ended up being the ignition coil. Replaced the coil and it started right up . Thanks to everyone that helped .

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
