It's a round hole in the flywheel housing. It may be on the side, or facing the front of the motor, depending on which type you have. The book that you were supposed to download shows it.

Ok good news and yet bad news too found the hole set the points fired rite up actualy got to mow with it excited had to use first gear whole time cause no real power to it stopped for a min to look at exuast was brite red then it just died . And wont start . But in other good news it mowed wonderful as far as cut even though blades havent been sharpened in almost 25 years which i will do jmech i think the carb gasget does need changed where can i get one we have no cub dealer around here would napa sell them

Oh it was blowing white smoke from exuast or carb area was hard to tell from the seat when i got off to look it died

Napa can get gaskets I think. I don't know their numbers. I know O'Reilly's does.

You need to stop mowing with it until you get the problem fixed. If it is running lean like I suspect it is, then your going to blow it up. It will seize the piston. Did you try setting it richer? Why did it die? Did you check spark after it died?

You sure it wasn't coming from the crankcase vent on the side of the motor? It's right between the exhaust and the carb.

on your carb there should be 2 needles, turn the one pointing up out a 1/4 turn and see if it improves. as j mech said if its running lean and you continue to run it then it will seize

It died just sitting there i left mower deck running to adjust the carb before i could get a screw driver it died i did try to restart it but acted like battery was dead motor turned by hand everything was very hot to the touch but i did turn the motor over .about the vent yes it very qell could have been smoking from there is that normal i wont mow with it again till i get it rite i was just excited it was running and finaly got to mow with it

smoke from that vent is considered normal to a worn out motor. turn the hi speed adjusting screw out.

Shut the deck off to adjust. You adjust the main at WOT.

Ok, so it wouldn't crank after it died. Is that the reason it won't start? How's the battery? Connections?

Ok, before we go much further, we need to know if the governor is adjusted correctly. And the carb. You have got to go through the tune/adjustment procedure for both the governor and the carb. We have to stop jumping around. As long as the motor will crank, this is the next step. If it won't, well, you have to fix that first.

OK, I have to ask. How did you set the timing?

yep, leaving the deck on is a good way to lose toes, feet, fingers, hands and private parts
