Checked my inventory and I do have the hoses and filter base from a 1811 I snagged off feebay sometime last year. I'm not sure if there are any more adapters needed, or if the (45 deg flare?) fittings screw right onto the block/fittings once that block off plate is removed.

The Series I is not rare. There are 82 series cub cadets all over the internet for sale, and not for sale, that still have the Series I in them.

From my understanding, if you had a flat yard and stayed on top of oil changes they lasted fine. If you mow hillsides and ditches like me, they didn't last at all. I've only seen a few Series I for sale, and probably half were blown.

Yeah they sure had to be careful with the hills. I'm sure there were alot of ticked off owners when the series I first came out.

That sure would suck to throw a rod on a new tractor. I guess if it was under warranty you wouldn't mind so much, minus the fact you'd probably get another KT17. Any former dealers/mechs on here have a record for most engines?

They were a very poor design, and almost sent Kohler into bankruptcy.
John Deere was so pissed they said they would NEVER speck another Kohler engine in their products. But if an operator didn't rev them cold, but allowed them to warm up as should be any engine, and kept the oil changed regularly they held up OK mostly, and as far as running on an angle not as much of a problem as now remembered. The connecting rod oil splash design didn't work as good on those twins, as it did on all single cyl engines of various manufactures. I would venture to guess most operators ran them hard and didn't do oil changes or even check the oil. Add that to a poor design as I said before, and it was a recipe for disaster. They sure as hell were not bullet proof like the old "K" series singles. The later KT series II corrected those faults with pressure oiling to the connecting rods by cross drilling the crankshafts. and installing a pressure regulator ball/spring to achieve #40 at hot idle and over #80 cold. Also some were specified with oil filters mounted on the block or remotely. The last and best are the magnums with mag ignition more and thicker webbing in the crankcase, *30 valve face angle and thicker crankshaft diameter at the base of the flywheel taper, as some skid steer loaders were experiencing problems there due to the abuse a skid steer gets. While the KT 17 Series II is a vast improvement over the I, I have had a few chuck rods. The Magnums seem to be more robust in every category.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens.
