Thanks for all of the great replies and interest. I have been traveling all week so sorry for the sporadic replies. As you can see in the picture, the 3206 is different. There is an L bracket that engages my diff lock. The only way I see to stop this from happening is to bend the bracket back. I hate to make such a permanent change, but I think it's the only way.

That would be an easy modification, and worth it in my opinion....I checked out a 3240 yesterday and it too had that bracket there - its no wonder now why the difflock gets broken in these machines.

I think I know what is going on here. They changed the brakes on the newer models. The newer ones only use one disc brake that is mounted on the differential inside the frame and our older ones use a disc on each axle outside the frame. That is why they are locking the axle when the brake is applied. Go to the parts look up and you will see the difference. That stinks because I don't think there is anything you can do about that.

It was very easy to bend back enough so it doesn't make contact. I just used an 18" adjustable wrench. All is good now, and if I need extra braking power, I'll manually press the diff lock. I put on some V61 front tires last weekend and mowing was much easier in the tight turns. Now I just need some Tru Power rear tires and I'll be good to go.

Yeah I swapped in a rearend from a newer aluminum rear design, right before they switched to the cast iron version, and they did away with the individual rear brakes. They use that brake on the output shaft instead. Between my 3205 and that 3184 that the rearend came out of there were other differences as well. It appears that the axles are actually larger in diameter between the two different models:



The 3205's original difflock-equipped rearend came with the dual disc brakes. The 3184 was open diff and output shaft brake. Both aluminum cases.

Its surprising how little in depth info there is out there for the 3K Series, considering how many of them are still in use. Fun part is that we are all still learning, so that keeps it fresh!

I cut the tab that’s welded on the brake rod that activates the diff lock when you hit the brakes! I used and angle grinder with a 41/2 inch cutter disc to cut the tab off! Body has to be removed to access this !
