J-Mech, I prolly should have trashed the block but the guy doing the work didn't think too much about it. I told him there were only 2 sizes of replacement seats available, 10 over and 100 over. He said he would make his own and didn't want to use those. IDK, I'm new to this so I hope it works. He is one of the well known race engine builders in the Atlanta area but that doesn't mean he can fixy lawn mower engines. I'm kinda afraid to see the invoice for his work...he never really gave me a set price so I hope I don't get a bill and use a lot of bad language.

Onan parts....I've searched everywhere for parts. I almost ordered from Onanparts.com but then I stumbled on this guy.http://www.gphope.com/store/cat/57
Gary was super nice to talk to and his prices were the best I could find. He told me those pistons are made (I think) for him and are a lot better than the original. He said he may start having rods made also. Maybe he was blowing smoke, IDK.

I was busy last week and didn't get a chance to stop in to see if the work is complete on my block. I know I will need some assistance when I put this back together so I will be asking a bunch of dumb questions soon I hope. I guess I need to

Todd,
It's not uncommon at all to have replacement pistons made. If the guy builds race engines, he's likely already having others made. I've looked into it myself, but just never did. MWSC has pistons made for them.

Hopefully he won't rake you over the coals. Holler if you need any help.

Todd,

Great to see someone give the old Onans some respect! Back in the 80's I worked for a equipment rental and small engine repair shop.. we ran a lot of Onans and honestly never had a bad one. I have an old SS16 Sears also that has Onan power.. It has been abused and really should be dead.. but the engine seems to be the best thing about it! It always cranks easily and has great power... seems a lot stronger than my 18hp Kohlers.

We used to press the valve seats back in Briggs aluminum block engines and then peen around them. After that we would true up the seats with a cutter and then lap the valves back in.. Always worked great!

Picked the engine up on Friday. They had to weld the block to repair where the valve destroyed the area that the intake seat is pressed in on both sides from being run loose. It hammered away at the aluminum and was way too deep for a new seat. Looks like he replaced all 4 seats and maybe they will stay in this time.

Bored it 20 over and had to grind the crank 10 under so I had to order new main bearings I was hoping I didn't have to do that but I found both bearings for $100.

Check out this cam bearing...kinda thin and it's splash lubricated. What's up with that?

You sure the rear cam bearing is splash lube? Sure the cam isn't hollow and has holes in both journals for the lube? I don't know, just asking. I'm sure the book gives the lube circuit. All Kohler books do.

Just wondering if that cam bearing is supposed to be pressure lubed and maybe it does not have the hole drilled in the bearing? Or that it was installed blocking the oil gallery?
