Narrow frame front axle play

Now the holes are close, I can get the pivot pin installed.


I wanted to have another final look at the spiral pin. I was looking for any cracks in this harden metal. There was wear, but not what I thought was excessive, and looked very cylindrical end to end, and straightness was true.

In order for me to get a straight hit on the punch, I needed to first release the bail on the implement lift lever, as I have spring assist and needed the push/dozer blade lift rod removed.

Small, light hits on the punch were many. I feared to crack the spiral pin and was extra careful. Tap- tap- tap and the spiral pin was seated flush, as when I removed it.


Next was to grease the newly seated axel.

Another look see under the tractor. The axel is installed and greased.




The axel now sits in a horizontal position, something I never seen before.

I cleaned all the components, and hardware. I used high temp grease to re-assemble the steering unit.


Here is the IH Cub Cadet, all back together again. Any forward/backward axel movement is now eliminated. No clunk-clunk left turn/right turn noise coming from the front of the tractor. After the snow season, we'll see if the gap has opened any.

Thank you! I did put a little thought into the project as a whole. What I wanted to also add to the thread, is to install the pivot pin's spiral keeper pin the same way you removed it. Meaning the end you use to punch out the spiral pin , install that end into the c-channel bushing first. My ideas about this are suggestive only, it worked!
