I have been a member here for some time but got the feeling anyone who owned a MTD version of a Cub was treated as a second class Cub owner. So while I visit now and then and have found some helpful information here, I enjoy My Tractor forum more and there is where you will find in depth threads of many of my projects.

Thanks Bill.
Can't figure out how to post pictures here. I did pull the motor yesterday. All the fins were caked up dirt, grass and oil. No wonder it was getting hot. Oil seal on drive shaft side of motor was leaking pretty bad. Found some of wiring on the coils had been chewed on by mice, could have been shorting out some. Seal toward pto looks ok, but I'm going to replace it while motor is out. All of the shrouds had at least 1/4" of caked up dried up stuff on them. Pressured washed the block, cleaned all of the shrouds and other parts in cleaning solution. I'll order the seals Wednesday when we get paid. I'll keep you posted on progress.

Walter, was the accordion connection between the engine and dash intact when you removed the engine?

Accordian connection is ok, I might need to replace it later.
Cover over that goes over the top of the battery area is there and in good condition, fuse box cover is there also.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
