It doesn't matter if you have spark, gas, and compression if they aren't happening at the right time. You haven't mentioned if you set the timing correctly or not, and this sounds like the problem. These are very hard to start if the timing is off.

LIke I said I'am new and green at this. I'am taking all the information everyone is giving me and trying to rule it out. Yes I've been reading the service manuals and am trying to get a timing light and locating the hole to veiw the timing. I had a 1966 pontiac tempest in the early 70's that jumped timing and I was thinking of it. I hope to get a timing light tomorrow and if I don't work to late (12Hr days getting old) i'll check it out. I found a new carb at napa for 120.00 and might just get it. I haven't work on anything like this in 30 Years so I really don't don't have everything I need. Getting it 1 piece at a time. Went today and got new plugs and a gapping tool to gap points and plugs.

Ok let's see if I got this right. in order to use timing light engine has to running. so to adjust timing while not running. turn flywheel till points are open to there max then adjust to .020. then should start? If Started run engine 1/3 throttle again adjust points till SP mark on fly wheel is centered in sight hole. Is this correct procedure?

The spark plug is making spark, correct? Well even with the carb. removed, you can get the tractor motor to pop-off by adding a few drops of gas in the spark plug hole or in the carb. hole on the motor. She should pop! Yea, those 1970 Tempest are cool! My friend in high school had one that I showed him was for sale. This was nothing short of a G.T.O! Rear spoiler, factory tac on hood, dual ram-air, 350 rocket, center shift consoel. Yup, there was a reason they had a handel up near the glovebox!

Do you have an ohmmeter? If so, you can use the static procedure in the manual. Find/clean the timing marks on the flywheel. Disconnect the coil from the points, and put one lead on the points, and ground the other side. Rotate the engine in the direction of normal rotation. When the points are closed, the resistance will be zero, and when they are open, it'll be infinity. When the points are just beginning to break (the meter fluctuates from zero to infinity) the "S" mark on the flywheel should be centered in the sight window. Some trial and error will be necessary. I'd gap them to 0.020" first and then do this. Believe it or not, I've had more than one tractor still fail to start after gapping the points to 0.020".
I would not buy the new carb...it's probably some non-adjustable POS that'll give you more trouble. These carbs are very simple to rebuild...all you need are a couple of wrenches, a spray can of carb cleaner, a piece of thin wire, and a 7/16" nut driver to remove the seat. johncub7172- If the timing isn't close to right, it will not fire. I just rebuilt the carb and couldn't get it to run. It had gas, even fludded the intake with gas but it wouldn't bump. I was about ready to open a can of worms and replace the points/coil/ ect but I poured some FRESH gas in the carb and she started right up and ran for a bit. After the rebuild I still had bad gas/water going in the carb and it wouldn't run. Cleaned out the tank and carb and that fixed it. What is the condition of your tank, lines, filter? This thing has been sitting so a simple check is to pour some fresh gas in the hole with out filter or carb for that matter and see what happens. Seems like your going to be making too many changes at once. Now, this pre-existing problem could be more involved and why the tractor was layed up in the first place. But check the gas!! .. |

WE did it guys, Got home tried it, No go.Sprayed carb clearner in carb reset points. put gas in spark plug hole tried it no go. Sprayed carb cleaner again this time all over inside and out put gas into hole again. Went inside for supper, Checked forum. Wrote down what to do next, went outside and she STARTED RIGHT UP. she cought and hicuped, blew some blue smoke for a few minutes and ran like a charm. It backfired threw muffer a couple of times an died but started right up each time. towards the end no problem at all.
Could not resist turn mower deck on cuts great. I love the way this thing cuts. It did throw the belt off once, put it back on no problem. I think it cuts better than my ariens hydro 934. THE WIFE EVEN AGREES. Ran tractor till gas ran out of the system. Put more in and ran tractor didn't backfire once. will go out later and try starting it again. WE did it Over the last year I've brought 5 Tractors and this is the first time I've been able to really use one. This weekend I will change oil, clean her up, sharpen mower blades, and grease everthing. I think I will get parts to rebuild carb. THANKS AGAIN GUYS

WAY TO GO,FER 100!!
Sure is nice to get one going, nice thing about a CC is even if you have to completely rebuild the whole thing it still isn't as huge of a project as something like a classic car restoration or a house makeover... And they are USEFULL!

That is one of the reasons I got into this they are easy to work on and are not quite as expensive as a car or full size tractor. It's a great feeling when you get it running still. I'am still on a high. It's been a long time sense I've done something like this. By the way buddy where are you these days New York Or Texas or somewhere in between? If you get up my way stop in.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
