Well, I drained the oil and did not find any metal in it. I took the linkage off the governor shaft and it does not spin around. It turns about a 1/8 of a turn and stops and then turns back the other way. Is that normal? I guess that is a good sign so far. I want to take the carb and all the linkage off and check it all then reinstall it. Anything other ways to check the internal condition of the governor? Thanks again for all your help

Thats what its sposta do. Id see if there is a manual here for the mag 18 and reset the gov. DONT turn it real hard, just till it stops. Its just a lever in there and the springs do all the work, kinda on the out side.

How the gov works basicly is trying to stop the eng. All the ones Ive set over the years, I still do some backwards. Bacily it goes in a counter clock wise rotation from the carb, with the throtal set wide open.

If it were me, Id start with the gov setting, then go to the springs. There are differant holes for the sensitvity.

Heres how it looks on the command, I dont have any pics of the mag. But youll get the jest of it.

I am going to reset the governor and see how that works. I have the service manual that show how to do it. I am just trying to rule out internal problems before I go any further. If there are no internal problems I will take the carb off and reinstall and adjust everything. I was expecting the worst but maybe it will only be a matter of adjustments. Thanks for the pics and your advice.

I'll bet the problem is the piece of junk Walbro carb. Replace it with an adjustable carb from a kt17. I've got a thread in this section on doing that. There is only so much you can do with a walbro carb and once the float seat is worn it's trash.

I have several carbs from the single cylinder kohlers. Will any of these work on the m-18? I don't like that fixed jet carb either. I never had one but I don't like the idea I can't adjust it.

Thanks,
Earl

I think you can use a #26 carb with the throttle and choke shafts from the Walbro.

GOOD NEWS! I believe I ruled out that the internal part of governor is the problem. I loosened the governor arm from the shaft and set it the way the manual instructed. It worked. The governor now works just the way it should. It still idles a little rough. I know if it was an adjustable carbureator I could smooth it out but there is no adjusting except that idle adjustment which does not do much. How do identify a #26 carb? Are they stamped? I have several carbs from the k series engines but am not sure what number they are.

Anyway, I really appreciate all your help. It is great having a resource like this.

Look inside the throat of the carb past the choke butterfly. You will see either a 26 or a 30 cast into the body. You can't miss it.

I believe there is still an idle mixture screw on it or at least there is on my walbro, just not a high speed adjustment. Mine idles perfect so it is possible to get it to idle good with some tweaking. I bumped into a guy at a local tractor show that had the kohler carb for the KT17 in great shape for sale for 50 bucks. Nice deal.

Got it running pretty good. There was 2 different plugs and neither one was the right one. Put a new set in that helped. Rides really nice. It rides like a cadillac compared to the single cylinder kohlers. Power steering is great. Once again, thanks for all the help.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
