I finally located a good used Kubota D662 head. From what I have been told, the D600/640 heads would not work on this engine. Bought it Monday morning and USPS delivered it today! After finding the cracks in the original head I pulled the pan and checked the rods. Found one bearing that was beginning to fail and replaced the rod. I need to collect or fabricate a few more parts-gas tank, fan assy, muffler and alternator before installing the engine in the 782. I am not in too much of a hurry since I now have the K321 in it. I just finished a re-do of the 44C mower deck. I sprayed it with Van Sickle International Off White 471 70 paint using a gravity feed gun. I am pleased with the color. The deck is on the tractor and waiting for me to apply the new decals. I purchased one new bearing assy and my machinist friend built a second new one similar to what some others have recently wondered about whether it could be done or not. I purchased a couple of NICE high load double sealed bearings from McMaster Carr and my friend made a new shaft to fit and a couple of sleeves to go over the bearings. So far it is working fine, but testing time has been very limited.

A small piece of babbit was coming loose in the cap. The crank was fine.

Ok...... I wouldn't do that but it's your motor. If one was flaking, then the other are probably not far behind.

That is a possibility. After it has been run for a while I may pull the pan and check all of them again. It was only run briefly when I first got it so something else could show up when it is run for a longer period.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
