Great job and awesome video's! It runs really good.
One thing about powder it forces you to replace everything. I prefer powder to paint.

thanks for the nice comments everyone....
thought id start on the steering box last night. easy enough to pull, then remembering what needed to be done to get it apart from one or two threads on here, i got it all apart and cleaned up to inspect. bearings are good, even the foam gasket is still in one piece, very compressed but still usable. i have some foam sheet thats looks similar to that so i will cut out another to reuse. the cam follower is a little worn, so i will reshape that. upper bushing is nice. will install one of the 'kit' thrust bearings on the pivot bolt when putting it back together. i think the biggest problem with this box is it was so far out of adjustment that it was binding on the left and right extremes of the turning circle, and was as loose in the straight ahead as ive ever felt on anything before..... heres how it looked when first pulled and after cleaning it up a little. i will take it to work today and clean up the tube and paint. will lightly glass bead the rust off the steering shaft as well and put some rust preventative on it. then will get it back together. im trying to keep the tractor as much together as possible at the moment and just fix the bad stuff first. |

nice wheel horses! im drooling over that powder coated kohler! have you ever had an RJ series wheel horse? i had an RJ58 with this tiny K91 4 horse kohler. you had to be sure to EASE the clutch pedal out or youd end up on your back with a little tractor on top of you. lol
nice 682 as well. my favorite series of cubs |

more progress on the steering. got the steering box all back together and in the tractor. cleaned up the cam follower just like was mentioned in a cordless drill at the bench grinder. nice and easy. made a new foam gasket as well....
while the box was out i got the front up in the air and looked at the pivot points. mainly the 'king pin' arrangement either side. the left side sleeve was seized in the axle so it needed to be removed and freed up. what a difference now with everything working as it should. i didnt purchase/install the steering upgrade thrust bearing yet, i wanted to see just how good the steering was without it. it will probably happen down the road when i pull it down to do the cosmetics. |
