Around here I'd say that's kind of high considering the hours and it doesn't have a 60" deck.
They'll run a long, long time. I've only overhauled a few of the 3 cylinder motors. None of them were gas. Most of the diesels were done in from overheating, or lack of maintenance to the fuel system. (Worn out injectors.)

I'd say your off. At least if you mow around anything, or your moving really fast. I'm going to guess your mowing between 1 and 1.5 acres, depending on how many things you mow around.

Fair enough.

So you think the one I linked is a good buy? A fair price? Should I be looking for something older?

I think the price is right, and no that's old enough. The Kubota gasser is the best gas engine you can buy.

Check out this thread (all subsequent links) for the common problems and what you can expect to do to make it a good machine for years to come.

From how you described how you will use this tractor You really don't need the extra stuff that you get with some of these models like aux hydraulics 3 point hitches, brinley equipment or sleeve hitches. What you need is a good reliable mower. I just picked up a JD GX345 with a 54 inch deck that looks like a new one. It sold in 2003 for almost $8000. It has a Kawasaki 20 hp water cooled engine and of course foot controls, power steering, hydraulic deck lift, adjustable steering wheel, cutting depth adjuster between your feet and deck that is stable on hills and has three blades. I paid $2500 for it but all it will do is mow and pull a trailer. I don't think you can beat that with any small tractor for what you need. No offense meant to the CC guys but there are some great green products too. Stay away from the big box store crap no matter the warranty. The repair time will be horrendous during the summer which of course is when you will need it the most. Keep looking its winter!

Just a quick look on CL, theres several options but I noticed that many of these old tractors have motors that are 10 to 16 HP. Are they really up to the task of a 48" deck?

Heres the only Cub with Super in the title in my area.

Just my 2 cents but I'd be all over that Bad Boy. Yes it will need a little TLC but your looking at a tractor that back in it's day was over $8000.00 I have 2 of those at the moment. Cool thing is you can do so much more than just mow or pull a cart. I'd try to get it for $1000.00 - $1300.00 It looks like it has been pretty well taken care of. Point out to the seller that the plastic is broken and that the side panels are no longer available. The grill is still available and one of our members is working on repo side panels but you don't need to let the seller in on that.

Sam Mac knows these Super tractors inside out. Tough to go wrong listening to his advice. Personally I think thats a great tractor, and better than anything new.

There WILL be some maintenance items to check out, but its all documented here step by step and you can take pics and post any questions along the way. A little time invested will have you a great machine that will last.

At the same time, just for mowing, a used zero turn might be worth looking at. I dont know anything about them or if its possible to get a good one in your price range, but the guys mowing grass for a living tend to gravitate to these zero turns - likely for a reason.

Take some time and browse through these threads to get an idea of what's involved in bringing one of the oldies back to good condition. Yes it will take a few $$$ and some time but when it's done you'll have a sweet machine that you can take the satisfaction of knowing you did it. Being a member here will also be a great resource for questions you may have.

If you can't find a super cub, a Deere 318, 330, 332 would be a second option. Or have you priced out a used commercial zero turn? I see allot of them for sale for under $2k that don't have too many hours on them. Ferris, exmark, bobcat, scag, lesco and so on
Shawnee has a good point some nice green options will work if you can't find a cub. Really no reason you couldn't find a cub though. But I would steer far clear of a 318 way overpriced and way over rated for the low hour life span an onan has.

That 2182 looks sharp, and having something quality to mow with will make the chore more enjoyable and fun. You will love power steering.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
