Dear helpers,

Guess what? I cleaned the glow plugs, cleaned the earth, recharged the battery, gave it 45 seconds on the glow plugs, fired it up and it started with a big puff of black smoke then cleared within a few seconds. I've taken it out in to my field and it is running sweetly and pulling like a train!

Its a mystery, but there you go, I'm now looking forward to using it during the coming season!

Many thanks to everyone who provided suggestions, I'm sure you put me on the right track.

Very Best Wishes From The UK

Ian

Glad to hear that you got it running. Just my 2 cents but I would run a BIG cable straight from the battery to the engine block for a ground/earth. Cubs are notorious for crappy grounds or earth as you guys on the other side of the pond call them.

Don't know if you did a glow plug upgrade or not but you may want to contact Oak, he has a bunch of diesels and can give you some tips. Not sure but I think he is trying to corner the market on them.

Take a look at this thread. Like I said Oak knows a lot more about these things than I do. I never got into any of this stuff. My Cubs burn gas.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
