OP, you are worried about nothing. You are trading a gear driver for a hydro. Obviously this is some kind of big deal to you. If your not comfortable with the deal, don't do it. They are equally built machines, just different transmissions and engine manufacturers. Basically it's the same difference between a 756 gear drive and an 826 hydro if you want to think about it in IH tractor talk. |

If you want it to mow with, you will be better off with the hydro.

In regards to the Kohler II, the one in my 1981 782 is original and untouched. It has more than enough power for what I use it for which is a tilling machine. It does smoke a little at start up. I like mowing with a gear drive personally.

I've been mowing with hydros for 20 some years and will continue to mow the "tight" areas of the yard (around the house and where the bushes and such things are)
BUT for the past couple of years, I've been on the look-out for a respectable old 128 that I can rebuild a 14 hp Kohler for, to mow the bigger areas of the yard (including the Highway ditches). I think it's time to set back and relax a little while mowing, instead of constantly having a hand on the hydro lever adjusting ground speed to compensate for varying conditions. Oh my gosh, I just realized that in my mind, I really do think I need a designated tractor for EACH job/attachment. And to think, I just had a conversation with a friend about others who have "disorders"... What a mess this is turning out to be.

Hey Yo Sam i/ve allways heard you have to have a tractor for every implement. I/ve slowly worked that my way, not that i intended to. Works out good for some things. Covered space is limited. I/m one tractor over the line sweet Jesus. Mike

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
