thats an excellent point, just because a part is new doesnt mean its functioning properly. ive gotten to the point where anytime i replace a thermostat i always check it with a heat gun to make sure its opening before i install it, i had 3 bad ones in a row from a reputable brand.

I checked the coil according to Roland's diagram and it is only 1.5 ohms between the + and - terminals instead of the 4 - 8 ohms and only 2000 ohms between +terminal and center terminal . I'll get that changed on Monday and get a new condenser also.

Glad to tell you all we are up and going. New coil, points, condenser, plug, and static timing plus the carb cleaning and new fuel filter and it is running great. The old points look okay, but just change them out along with the conderser. As a bonus, my old problem of running at 3000 rpm at half throttle is gone. I can throttle up nice and smooth without a problem. I have it set at 1300 rpm at idle and 2700 rpm at full throttle. This is a great site and I thank you all again for your suggestions.

Now to get the front blade and rear weight on before the "four letter word" gets here.

I know I'm low at the high end, but it runs fine for what I do and I figure it is a littler easier on the old engine.

Not if you load it at all. You should set the engine to run 3600. If you don't want to run it that fast, don't push the throttle all the way up. Better to have it if needed than to lug it because you can't run it where it's designed to run.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
