Sounds like your previous owner was related to the Hippy that I bought my last 1872 from. He had a wall switch hanging out of the dash and both it and the stock PTO switch had to be on to engage the PTO. (Can you say what safety switches.) If I was you I would get a cheap multi meter, You can get one from Harbor Freight and start by checking the PTO circuits for bad connections or breaks in the wiring. Download a copy of the factory service manual and you should have no problem following the circuits and safety switches used. When you engage the PTO does the relay energize? If so is power to the PTO coming out of it? It is really a simple system but without a manual and wiring diagram can be hard to diagnose and troubleshoot.
