It lives! I finally got around to getting the motor put back together. Didn't run into any real problems with the reassembly. Got the cam and crank into end play spec. Same with the valves. I had to give the head the circular sandpaper rubdown, and it seems to have sealed ok. Compression seemed good, (as much as it can be measured with the ACR anyhow). After fiddle farting with the points and ignition for a while, I got it fire up and run. I seems to run good at low and medium rpms, but I need to figure out why it wont run at full throttle very well. I need to readjust the timing and possibly a carb setting, and try again. Any other suggestions on why it will not run at a higher rpm?

But all in all, so far so good. No oil leaks, no knocking, AND no smoke lol. Thanks for the advice on getting this thing together. TB

Did you adjust the governor arm upon reassembly?

Did you use a tach and set the stop on the lever for high idle no load?

It's all in the manual......

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the governor. Although I had the arms assembled on the gov shaft, and had it adjusted as per the manual, that was not the issue exactly. Turned out that the po had broken the gov spring and "reshaped" it. Didnt realize how much of the spring was missing at first. Then I compared the spring to my K341 and K301 and saw that the spring was way to short. In addition to it being too short, the end that connects to the gov arms was not shaped very well and when hooked onto the gov arm, did not allow enough free movement.
Once I swapped out the spring, it now runs alot better. That is all good and well, but now that it is running both of the hydro valves are weeping out of the top hole, and that will be my next task. Thanks again jmech TB

Take your valves out and ship them to

This guy does great work rebuilding them. Last set I had done cost me about $75.00, turn around is normally 7-9 days.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
