.039-.043 for the gap. PM me your e-mail address and I'll e-mail you the service manual for the engine.

Here is an update.

So, I stopped and got some gas and put about 2 gallons of fresh gas in tank. Ran good for 5 - 10 minutes. Tried to run it a little hard under load. It then started struggling so I turned off pto and lowered the throttle some. It surged a little as well. I then took side panel off and then started running it again. After about 5 minutes it started struggling so I turned off pto and immediately pulled the fuel line from carb and it seemed to be pumping gas ok. It wasn't a constant stream but was coming out heavy in squirts. I then shut off engine, reconnected fuel line and got it to run good for a while. It did it again after about 10 minutes so I turned of pto, the engine surged ( up and down, up and down), and pulled the fuel line again and the engine still surged with the fuel line disconnected. The fuel pump seemed to be pumping enough fuel as fuel was still pumping out of the fuel line. Again, wasn't a constant flow but sprayed out pretty heavily. So I used it another 5 - 10 minutes and it acted up again and the engine surged again and then I turned it off. After a few minutes it started and ran fine again. Very strange. I am just confused why it runs well for a while and then starts acting up. If the fuel/air ratio was incorrect, wouldn't it run rough all of the time?
Should have a good constant flow of fuel. When was the last time you changed the fuel filter? Is the vent for the tank clear? Vent is in the gas cap.

Sam has a really good point that most people will overlook and it's hard to track down. If the vent on your gas cap isn't working you will lose the flow of fuel, until it catches up. Then it will work fine, until it creates enough suction and has to catch up. I forgot I had the same issue with a snowblower before. Drove me crazy. When it starts to act up, twist off the fuel cap and see if it improves.

Fuel filter was changed along with new fuel lines. The vent in gas cap appeared to be clear. There is a little filter in the gas cap lid rubber insert. That seemed clear too. The vent hole on top of gas cap is very small though. Like the tip of a pen. I wonder if I could drill that out and open it up a tad.

That's a good idea. Maybe I will try that the next time it acts up. I just installed brand new spark plugs a few minutes ago. Just wanted to eliminate a possible spark plug issue since I just cleaned and regapped the old plugs during my last tune-up. Starts up and runs smoothe but haven't had a chance to test it under load yet. I will try the gas cap idea tomorrow if it acts up. But hopefully it doesn't!

Jibber have you tried to pull the choke out some when it starts acting up and see if it then smooths out? Gotta make sure this is a fuel and not a fire issue. Still sounds like a fuel issue but always good to verify.

Check the filter anyway. Doesn't take much to cause a restriction. If after everything you may have a fuel pump that is on the way out. They had 2 mounting spots for the 2182 some have the pump under the seat pan and some the pump is on the side of the motor mount on the left side. Personally if it's under the seat pan I'd relocate it to the motor mount, just easier to get at. Also I'd probably go with a low pressure after market pump, the Cub pump is stupid expensive. Here is a link for a Facet pump.

Ok. I was planning on ordering a fuel pump anyway. Any suggestions on a good one? I think I can get an OEM one from kubota for around $100-$110. I prefer a top quality one, not an aftermarket knock-off. Aftermarket is ok as long as it is of good quality. It is mounted on the side of motor mount already. Right by the fuel filter. Easy to replace.

If Sam says that pump will work, I'd put it on without hesitation. Looks like they run about $50.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
