The first 169 was serial number 506737 and it is still around. It is registered on the site(over there). They started production in late March of 1974.

Didn't realize these were so rare until I read this thread. Went back a day or two to a Craigslist ad - still listed. I have no knowledge if that price is any good or not, but seems to be in decent shape. Shared it in the classifieds

To the OP - congrats on your score!

In case you cant read the pic of the tag here is the serial number: 2050048U523342. Thanks for any input!
Looks like your was built before they "ran out" of hydraulic lifts....or maybe added later?

Mine is #529690 (late oct '74?) and came without one.

Yes, I was surprised that my tractor does have the hyd lift.. I don't know if it was built at IH with it.. or the dealer added it later.. Most of the 169's I have ever seen don't have it.. I was told IH offered a program starting in Feb 1975 to add the lifts to the 169's that were built without them. I'm sure some owners didn't know about it or didn't bother with it..

I've always wondered why the same thing didn't happen to the 149's.. Apparently they were all built with the lift.. you would think the valve shortage would have affected both the 149's and the 169's.. unless they were done with 149 production before they ran out of valves?

My operators manual, dated 6/74, says Models 149 and 169 have hydraulic lift as standard equipment?......I'm still looking for mine, but all I can find is a big spring!

Default nice find in the mail today for the 169

Stumbled into this a few days ago... decided to go ahead and buy myself a present.. The one on my 169 wasn't really correct.. Was excited to find the "right" one... still looking for a block to muffler elbow! And a lot of other stuff! Looking for the needle in the haystack is half the fun though... isn't it?

CONGRATS on the air filter assembly Jay.
Little here, little there and soon it'll be a "complete" 169.
Ah, think it's your turn to one evening, need to catch up.

You're going to love the Earthcavator. Single most useful tractor implement I've ever owned. If you end up sandblasting and repainting, be advised that there are reproduction decals available here http://www.clickitandstickit.com/gannon/

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
