That may not be the original engine. The original was a B48G but that looks like a P220G. The P series used an electronic pickup off of the crank like this pic shows.

The crankcase breather was also to the left side of the carb on a B48 as viewed when sitting in the seat as shown here.

The coil was also installed laying on its side on a B48 and they stand straight up on a P series.

I believe your 982 has a newer replacement engine.

I knew someone would figure it out. I assumed it was the older model due to the serial number on the tractor. Thank you for your help.

No, I don't think the P series came out until the late 80's or early 90's. That was the correct replacement engine for your tractor.

Did you check the intake manifold to see if it was split or needing resealed?

The P series in the early 90's had issues with loose valve seats. You may want to do a leak-down or compression check also.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Default more questions

Ok, wiring is done, carb cleaned. Driveshaft was wobbling, so I pulled it out. It had double rag joints on both ends. I ordered 3 more new ones, bet you can't tell which is the new one that I already had. The flex plate on the motor side is wore out, can I just replace the bearing or do I need to replace the whole thing? Also, this will be a ways the road, but will a 3xxx series power steering setup work on a 982?

If the mounting plate is not worn or distorted, you can just replace the Pilot Bearing.

Do you happen to have the part number for the bearing?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
