I turned a 580 (yellow/white 582 special) into a 582 by installing an IH gear drive rear and clutch. The peerless trans is definitely inferior compared to the IH 3-speed rear. It weights a lot less than an IH rear. To replace the axle seals, you must remove the hubs from each axle, which rust on so tight you wouldn't believe. I don't think they are as strong as the IH rear; I put the rear from this tractor up for sale locally, and someone paid me a lot to ship it to Maryland because his tractor's rearend broke and he couldn't find one locally. The parts must not be as easy to find as you think. I've also seen a lot of other people looking for rearends or parts for the rears. Besides, a REAL tractor doesn't have a belt clutch. If the peerless trans is so great, why isn't everybody using them for tractor pulling like they do with the CC rears? |

Well all I have to say is "YOU SUCK"! I need one of those for my red x82 collection and they seem to be had to find and sell for a stupid amount on Ebay. I don't know if the collectors are buying them, or if people think that it's better because it's a "Special". But anyway, congrat's on your new tractor.

AJ, I missed one last fall that was nicer than my 582 for $350. Missed it by about 10 mins. He sold it to the first guy who looked at it for $275
. Oh well they'll be others.

I've had 2 Specials and 3 1100's...got to agree with Matt G on his input,"hook, line and sinker"...1 Special and 1 1100 had rear end issues when I got them. BUT, I had one Special with a tiller and was a outstanding combination! Question? Why was this post moved to the CC/MTD section? Tractor is a early 1981.

I currently have a IH 482, a IH 582, a IH 682, a IH 782, and a CCC 982. I'm still looking for a 582 Special, a 782D and a 1282. I know where there is a 1282, but I'm too cheap to buy it. I guess it has been sitting outside for a while and he wants $600 for it. Maybe I'll get desperate and buy it one of these days.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
