Zippy, I've been following your thread since you started. I'm doing about the same thing as you, but am nowhere near as far along. I'm really looking forward the seeing the 100 finished. They are such cool little tractors. Keep up the good work.
Regards, Mike |

Mike, yeh these tractors are cool. I'm also looking forward to it being finished, but I've learned it won't come easy or fast. Ran into a road block last night while taking the engine apart. Got the tins off and head, then went for the pto and all but one of the set screws are either stripped or the allens are rounded out. I'm thinking the PO must have tried to get it apart in the past, and did a @$&% job. I've never had a tractor with stripped or rounded set screws, another first. Soaked them with PB and just take the wait and see approach and try easy outs, and some yankee ingenuity.

Got some pictures of the engine today, (date on camera is wrong) went to hardware store for some more drill bits to drill out the PTO set screws, boy does that suck!
Nothing like pictures for reference's, notice the washers on the S.G. I would have forgotten the order for sure With the head off, (picture is blurry) looks pretty tired, it never went through oil, I really wanted to just clean up the carbon and put new gaskets all around, but I'm not so sure now. What do the experts think? I also did the reflectors a little different, painted them, they just didn't look right cleared. I think this will look ok.

Todd,
The reflector housings look great yellow! My thoughts don't really count as I am not a expert on these engines! I have had several that run real well with just some minor items like gaskets. Easy for me to say this but its up to you. As much work as you have put into the rest of the tractor I would seriously consider a complete engine rebuild. Heck you have it just about apart. Now is the time to freshen everything! I know its more money and time. I guess looking at the marks if any in the cylinder bore and maybe measuring the bore would be good places to start. Second would be to pull the oil pan off and give a good exam on the inside. Then the condition of the valve seats. Keep us posted. Love the pictures! Its going to look awesome! Regards, Chris

Not a good cub day. Been trying to get the front PTO off. The set screws are rusted bad.
I tried drilling them out, but had no luck. So now I cut the pulley basket to get at the bearing set screws. Ok, got those out. Beat on the darn think till I was blue in the face and now I see, there's a clip on the front holding everything on So tomorrow night I'll try and get it off without brealing it into pieces, I've never had trouble getting one of these PTO off before. So I guess I'll be able to cross that off the list now! Will be posting a want add I guess for the starter pulley

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
