Ok, guys thanks. I'm going to try to reach the po and ask some questions as suggested. I don't have a pressure tester, (yet) but I can find one to borrow or buy. I was curious about the pressure too, but had no idea what it's supposed to be. It doesn't appear that the steering control valve has been worked on. I will ask him that too if I can get hold of him.

The 3K series use a Hydro Gear pump but use the Char-Lynn power steering box. I'm thinking you need to do some pressure checks. Have you down loaded the Hydro Gear service manual?
If not, here it is. I'm pretty sure you have a BDU 21.

It sounds like when you make minor steering corrections/changes, you get power assist but when you make major moves with the steering wheel, you feel a lot of resistance? Is this right?

If I have the wheels straight and turn it to the right or left, It feels a little tight to start with and gets easier as I turn it all the way. It does have some assist.
One weird thing I should have mentioned a long time ago is, if I have it turned all the way to the right or left and then turn it the other way, when I get to the middle where the wheels are straight and keep going, it will sort of hang.
I forgot about that. I hope I explained that so you guys know what I'm saying.

I cannot tell you what is wrong here but it sounds to me like you have low pressure to the assist cylinder for some reason. May be what Methos said in my post above starting on post #8.

Sorry, I can't help.

Based on the last e-mail with pics I got from Jim he still has the return and the pressure lines crossed. I feel bad for him but short of driving to his place I don't know what else to do. Just sent an e-mail with a pic and directions. All he needs to do is swap 2 lines because he still has the pressure and return lines crossed. If this doesn't fix it I give up.

I guess I'm reading that drawing wrong. If I cross the lines at the valve behind the fan, it locks the steering up.

Jim

All I can say is I'm going by the info in the service manual and trying to make something that Cub never produced work. I'm sorry but I don't have any other suggestions other than take it back to the guy that put it together in the first place and tell him to make it work or refund your $$$. Keep us posted on how this turns out.

Edit: Jim just want to say that this is the first one I've ever given up on. Got me on this one.

Well I'll most likely come out to be wrong. You guys know more than I do about this stuff. I'm not being hard headed, It just doesn't work If I switch them the other way, it locks up tight. Anyway, thanks to everybody for all the input. I'll keep on til I get it fixed.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
