Tom, IMHO I would take the 3000 series machine over any other Cub ever built for mowing grass. I like the shaft drive deck and how it stripes the lawn + you have the foot control for speed and a great turning radius. They are a great lawnmower and if you can find a hydro tiller that is even better but I think they are too light for anything else. You have a GT deck on your 2084 and they are better than the ones built prior to them but don't compare to the 3k ones. The rear ends are the weak link in the 3k tractors with the locking differential so read the manual on how to use it or you will destroy it.

John, a 982 is one with no options, 984 has the front ports IIRC and the 986 has all 3 options, rear lift with pto and front ports.

So does that mean the 3 pt on my 982 was not factory? Was it a dealer installed option or something a PO added? FWIW, mine has no front ports or rear PTO, and no turning brakes.

If it was IH built then there is no way to tell. They used a system called the "kind code" and it was 2050595Uxxxxxx for the 982's. MTD started a different model number system and they also built 982's. Their model numbers were something like XXX-982-XXX, XXX-984-XXX or XXX-986-XXX and below that was a serial number. Their model numbers could tell you what options it left the factory with but some could be dealer added.

I love my 2084. It's right in the middle of the Cyclops series timeline and has the best of the older and newer Cyclops features IMHO. The Command series engines are easy as pie to work on/service, and there are a host of different attachments/decks that you could hitch up to that tractor. It's the 'last of the best' series of tractors as many on this forum will tell you. The tight turning radius and tilt steering are features not available on the prior line of Supers (72-series) but the trade off is the 'manufactured composite' (or what ever the sales lines was) fenders and hood. I'm on my second 2084 and it's the crown jewel of my collection with it's 60" Haban deck and 551 snowblower and factory rear weight bracket. Nice find on one in Texas!

My 2084 has served me well for a number of years now and still going strong. I will be adding the rear braces when I remove the snow blower and wheel weights. I have a 54 inch mower and aside from a little wheel problem repaired with some bushings from Lowes it cuts a beautiful swath. I also put firestone ags on the rear and for most of the winter had no problems with traction especially with the individual brake pedals to help with traction. Keep a close eye on the valve covers as mine started to crack and leak and I understand that is kinda common on the command engine. A new gasket is available that is an improvement to the valve covers too. There are grease fitting on the drive shaft to lube the cv type joints and need to be periodically greased just a little goes a long way. If over greased, grease will be flung all over the back of the engine making a real mess. Do not ask how I know this.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
