Well it's the IH Red. Looks more orange in some of these pics, probably due to the fluorescent lights in the shop. Got the rear end back in the frame last night, replaced the neutral safety switches, (ignition switch is fine as it turns out). Started on the clutch assembly, replaced the throwout bearing, spacer and teaser spring, painted some other parts, primed the gas tank. Still waiting on parts from the sand blaster, will have to call him today. The creeper arrived (Thanks, Dan). looks fine, so will clean that up a little and hit it with a coat of paint. When the new gasket arrives, I'll cut the drive shaft and install that.

I was a little apprehensive about painting a venerable old cub red. I'm such a "stock" guy, it was a little unnerving departing from the traditional colors. But, being a little bit of a creative person, I wanted to "push my comfort zone" as they say. It is growing on me. I'm still thinking about the final color scheme in terms of what will be white vs. what will be red, as well as the decals and insignia. Part of me wants an entirely red tractor--like the cubs and Farmalls. But a two tone scheme can be attractive, too. Decisions, decisions!!

Supposed to get a tropical storm here in VA tomorrow, so no boating, will just have to stay in the shop...

Go with the IH yellow for the accents. It would really pop with that red. If that is too much, outline the yellow in black.

Rebuilt the steering gear last night, new bearings, new follower stud, and easy steer upgrade. Painted it, along with the fuel tank, the creeper gear, 3 point lift, and a few other parts.

I was going to take the fenders off the 147 and use them, but I think I might have an alternative nearby that can be had reasonable--will let me preserve the 147 intact.

The spring assist came, but I have another idea that will take some experimentation. If it works, it might have widespread application for cubs everywhere. More to come next week.

Off on a boating trip this weekend, once Andrea moves north, so no work on the 148R until next week. Haven't heard from the sand blaster. Need to call him.

Great looking build! I just finished all the mechanical on my 168 I put together, what a beast! Looks like it will be a nice tractor. I read earlier you were putting in a stock clutch? What all are you planning on using the extra power for in this ol girl?

This 148R will a multi purpose machine. Primary will be a 48 inch mower. I'm currently looking at putting a hydraulic lift on it, just because. How does your 16HP engine work in your 168? I originally wanted a K341 but couldn't find one and thought without the balance gear it might shake my teeth out. So I picked up a K321. Would be interested in your experience.

That 16hp in it is a hoss. More power than ill ever use probably, no balance gears in it, id personally never run those in any k series its a bomb waiting to go off. It doesn't have any more vibration than a 12hp does in my opinion. I put a red pullin spring in my clutch along with a pillow block bearing behind it to help with vibration and driveshaft flex. Wheelies are no issue with this powerhouse.ha I imagine a 14 will be the same way. Im mainly gunna use mine for pulling a plow but a deck might find its way on there. I also put a 13 tooth input pinion in it so things are a little faster since I have the extra power.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
