Glad you have your tractor running again BassBlaster! Hopefully you will find your real issue before this leaves you stranded with your yard half done. Intermittent electrical problems suck trying to figure out.
I'm also glad your tractor was never used for a bon fire, but I can relate. I remember once my uncle had a used old lawn tractor that he got cheap and constantly had to work on. He got so frustrated with it that one day he left it running and in gear, jumped off and shot it with his 9mm until it stopped driving in a cloud of smoke. I think it was justifiable homicide if I remember correctly! Sometimes you have to appreciate living in the country! I don't recall every completely destroying anything out of frustration like that, but many years ago I was upgrading the suspension of my beloved 1978 Chevy 4x4. My tool collection consisted of a lot of Chinese junk. After the 4th or 5th tool broke and I left a large chunk of knuckle skin on the frame, and I gathered everything in my tool box that was marked "made in China" and threw them as hard as I could into the corn field next to my house. I always wondered if the farmer found them or not. They should have just about rusted far enough by now to be reclaimed by nature, which is where they should have stayed to begin with. |

Good job on gettin r done!!!
My old 2166 did not lead a lush life, and was exposed to elements during the season. In winter in sat in a barn- but then ya had to deal with donkeys, and cats, and birds, and rodents. The last few years- I was constantly working on her to keep her going. Between fuel and electrical- it was a challenge. The last hurdle to overcome was the ignition switch wiring that was compromised by a shop, and further comprimised by the elements. Chris |

Thanks for all the encouragement guys. Im determined to make this thing right. I have too. Too much invested now to quit!
Okay, new problem. Today is the fist time Ive been able to get it out of the garage and use it since putting the engine back in. For some reason at full throttle it starts to run kind of sporadic and then when I turn the PTO on, it pops and cracks and acts like its starved for power. At idle, it runs just as smooth as can be. Hoping this is something simple. Something out of adjustment or something but I don't know where to look.

Did you ever get the fuel lines replaced and the fuel shut off valves cleaned out? I'm wondering if it's starving for fuel?

That's exactly what I thought it sounded like to me. Starving for fuel. Yes, everything in the fuel system has been replaced. Bushings, lines, filter, valves cleaned. I even pulled the carb back apart yesterday and cleaned it for about the 20th time with no change. I also replaced the fuel pump with no change. Hoping that cures the priming issue after sitting though.
I did notice the line from the pump to the carb is kinked. Its a hard corner to the front of the carb and that line just wants to kink. Maybe it finally closed off. I have a piece of fuel line left. Ill replace that and report back.

Something to thing about..................
I have an 1864 that I put together out of three different tractors and I simply love it. Now, that said, I have had problems with it not starting after sitting idle for a day, stalling and running hot. It's always started right off after sitting idle for a day by using a little starter fluid. Hit's instantly and good to go. It did this even though the float bowl was still full of fuel and the solenoid was pulling back to let fuel flow. I have finally convinced myself that SOMETHING is stopped up in the carburetor in spite of the fact that I've cleaned it, blown it out, 4-5 times along with new fuel hoses, shut off valves cleaned and new fuel filter. Tomorrow, I'm going to put a different carb on it and see if it doesn't make the problems with no start and hot running go away. Yes, the tractor has run great and has good power. Just doesn't want to start after sitting idle for awhile and seems to run hotter than any of my other tractors. |

I have a CH and a Vanguard that don't like to fire off after siting for a while. I use an empty gear oil bottle to give them a shot of gas down the throttle bore and they seem to fire right off. That said once running I have no more issues. You said you are having problems when under load so that is why I asked about what you did to the fuel system. Just shooting in the dark, did you ever mess with the governor? Is it properly adjusted? Even if you have not touched it you may want to check it.
![]() Edit: Do you have the correct type of fuel filter on it?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
