You need to crank that baby all the way up. Speed up the wire for sure. Should sound like bacon frying, only without the pops. Just a constant sizzle.

That wire is correct if you are not using shield gas.

Todd I'm not familiar with the cricket but a couple things to look for and or maybe change. You're using flux core wire so make sure the polarity inside the welder is set correctly. It will tell you how to hook the two cables up internally, straight polarity versus reverse polarity. You need to use straight polarity for flux core wire, it does make a differences and is sometimes overlooked.

Make sure the wire rollers and tension on them inside are correct because it's adjustable. Flux core wire is softer and if the feed rollers are slipping on the wire it won't be fast enough or consistently coming out and giving that surge of wire at times and sometimes not.

Also the feed wheels are specific to wire size and are most of the time able to be swapped around and are stamped for it as well As on the tip. I personally use a .030" wire on my smaller machine, but also use shielding gas. I'm not a fan of the flux core wire because of the spatter and mess it makes leaving the slag. Is your machine capable of using gas? If it is I would get a small tank and switch.

Technique of course matters a lot but making sure the machine is set up right first is equally important.

Jon, I will do a little practice welding next time.

Alvy, I think I checked the polarity the last time I used it but I will double check it again. I didn't look at the rollers or check the tension either and now that you say that I don't think the wire is feeding consistently. I will check that too.

This machine came to me from a mechanical contractor that owed us money so there is no telling how much use it had or any maintenance had been done to it.

Well, it was 71* here today so I figured I would spray some 935 white paint on my crappily welded wheels. 71* on Christmas, what's that all about? This project is taking forever to get done.

Still swinging at this 982. Wow, I started this one over a year ago. I just didn't have the time to stay on it like I wanted to.

I'm trying to save the original paint as much as I can but the floorboards had a good bit or rust on them so they got bead blasted and painted. I hope I can blend the old paint in with the new.

Either you were painting weights for inventory, or you have something unmerciful planned for this Cadet

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
