Update on this thing. Pulled the head to replace the head gasket and happened to see this wasp nest in the blower housing. So cleaned it out with the vacuum cleaner and air compressor... No wonder the poor thing stunk so bad when it warmed up.
Got my sheet of glass out and the sandpaper and trued up the head, replaced everything and brought it up to temp, let it cool down and re-torqued the head and it's golden.
Now all that's needed is getting one of these decks in cutting condition, and down the road it goes.
And the wife came home from work yesterday with a gift for me, cause I'm such a nice guy, and she wants me to "stay cool"!

Even when you are not restoring one, your work is excellent!
Going to make somebody a nice tractor.

Todd,
Good talking with you tonight! This tractor doesn't know how good of hands it is in. Hope its new owner appreciates the work you have done. I like the wasp nest!
Regards,
Chris

Well, I think it's ready to go back to work.
Runs great, an mows pretty darn good also. Got the old 42" working, so all that I can add to that is, another one saved.
Feels good to drag them out of the "back 40" and bring them back to be operational.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
