It is beginning to sound more of an electrical issue. Wondering if its something odd like a damaged wire making poor/intermittent contact to the coil or to the points. You have done a lot to the fuel system, why not go over the ignition with a fine tooth comb as well. If this is to be a weekly mower it wouldn't be wasted time to replace anything in question as well as having peace of mind as to its condition.

Not likely. He stated in post 1 that it would only run at WOT, and wouldn't run at lower speeds.

I'm leaning toward that "overhaul" the PO did..... I'd say the motor is junk. Valves probably sticking and bad, crank may have been galded and the cylinder worn out.... but he just stuck a new rod and piston in it, said it was fixed and sold it. I think you have multiple problems. Could still have carb issues..... it's not hard to clean a carb. Doesn't take 3 tries to get it done. If you've been over it that many times and it still isn't working, either you have no idea what you are doing or looking for, or there isn't anything wrong with it.

I thought you said the guy who sold it to you was "looking for a carburetor" for it?? Not like those are hard to get. Tons of them on ebay. New ones for like $35. (Personally, I'd prefer the old carb, and just fix it if it has issues.)

He already said it has a lot of new ignition parts. I don't think throwing parts at it is the way to go..... or a good recommendation.

It will consistency start after sitting and run between 5 and 45 seconds. It will usually start a second time and sometimes a third time.

This morning it started with the choke. I eased the choke off and when it began to die, I choked it again. This repeated maybe 5 times before it wouldn't stay running again.

Well..... figure out if it's running the carb bowl dry and not filling it back up. Pretty easy to diagnose that.

I think you should get rid of that. If your fuel tank, lines and sediment bowl are clean you don't need it and it can cause fuel flow problems.

For those of you who have said you are interested in the outcome, here's an update:

As it turns out, the flow was fantastic but was continually changing as the mower ran...

When I replaced the new seat in the carb, I was afraid of over-tightening to the point that it wasn't tight enough. It worked it's way loose which lowered the shut off pin. As you now probably have deducted, the float was shutting off the gas flow too soon, and the gas flow into the bowl. After sitting, it was slowly filling the bowl, allowing it to start again.

Now to replace the deck belt that just broke. Thanks for your input guys. I'm sure I'll be back soon.

I will take it out after I'm sure that the tank is clean. When I took the bowl off once, there was a tiny bit brown oily substance in the bowl. There's a tiny rust spot in the bottom of my tank so I'm gonna clean it again.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
