What a pain to get to the carb.
So I think I found the problem , I don’t think the long spring came off while taking it apart but would this spring off cause the surging ? I put it back on and it appears the natural seated position in the hole is not very good so a crimped it a bit so it couldn’t jump off. |

That spring may cause surging, but usually it's caused by one of the small passages in the carb blocked. The spring helps to control the response of the governor so that it generally won't run-away at high speed if the governor fails.
It's basically a safety return spring because most modern carbs no longer have a throttle plate return spring. If the governor fails the engine may run away, and that little spring would help return it to idle or cut off position. |

Just tried it and running fine now , choke turned off after a couple minutes and it’s good , seems to be revving higher at Idle.

![]() ![]() Congrats. Now you have a spare carb coming! Get the fuel shut off valve, and run the carb dry after each use. Maybe that small spring was letting the governor float around too much. |

Yes spare carb is not a bad thing. I was so excited with seeing the spring off and doing a well look at that moments I totally never thought of adding the shutoff. I take it this has to come back apart to add the shutoff? Would I simply add an extra long fuel line and leave the shutoff hanging low ?

Fuel shut off can go anywhere in the fuel line that is easily accessible. Just drain the fuel, cut the line, install the valve, and a couple pinch clamps. I would not generally add any fuel line. If it goes below the level of the float bowl, may make it hard for the fuel to gravity feed to the carb. Fuel does not push uphill, like any liquid and all fuel systems on these are gravity fed from the gas tank.

![]() Is the spark plug in this machine a Champion, no name on it and says F6RTC and LG . Also for the fuel shutoff is it a 1/4” I’ll be asking for? Thanks Lynn |
