Been trying my hand at lapping the valves. No clue what I am doing. The old Zim tool things my dad brought were pretty worthless. I used the new double ended suction cup stick versions with mild success. Pic of the the head with the displaced valve guide. Took a break and clean the engine bay of dirt and grease. Is there any adjustment to the steering on these manual steering boxes without breaking them down?

How to adjust the steering box is the same as any of the manual steering tractors. Check the manual for the 82 series tractors. Valves look just fine. Put it back together and pop a cold one.

Well, took some more stuff apart on this tractor tonight. I knew the steering was not right so I took the box out of the frame in a rush. Got it on the bench, scraped it down, and blasted it with this Wal-mart degreaser I bought this morning. It is a foaming product that really worked quite well. The shaft was moving and down 3/16 or more. Figured the bearings were toast and they were. The bottom bearing cup had a good digger in it also. The cam follower pin thing has a couple of pretty good flat spots on it. Time to order some parts, I guess. This was an experiment most of all. I never had one apart before. I really was hoping it could be cleaned up and adjusted but that would have been too easy and cheap! Took a few pictures. Is the top plastic correct on this or does it need driving down flush?

Here is a better shot of the top plastic piece I mentioned. And the shaft was slopping up and down an additional 3/16" with the top plastic piece in that position. I have no clue so as always- much help needed and greatly appreciated.

Nice work Steve! Put the cam follower in a drill press or regular drill and take a grinder and dress it up. It doesn't need to be perfect. Here is one that I did and it worked fine.
DSC01913.jpg DSC01917.jpg Chunk that plastic piece in the garbage and get a used front wheel bearing or most hardware stores sell cheap bearings in the nut and bolt section. I think it's 1 3/8 OD but measure to be sure. Gonna be a nice little unit when you get done.
