Got the rear sealed up today and took it outside for priming and painting. I also found the best speed control plates for the side of the hydro that were tightest on the shafts out of three or four hydros that i have. It will need a little welding and filing, but nothing major, and they won't get any paint, so they'll be fine. I've got the rear painted black, but can't install it until the new trunion springs arrive. I'll get some pictures of it in the morning for ya'll.

That CI rear is HEAVY, that's for sure.

How should the brake calipers be installed? With the disc equally spaced between the pads, or with the disc closer to the inside pad? I would think equally spaced.

The brakes should be equally-spaced. I hope you masked off the aluminum part of the hydro pump so you don't have to strip dried paint off of it.

The CI rear is about 55 lbs heavier than the aluminum one...you're gaining the equivalent to a set of IH wheel weights.

I stayed away from the hydro unit with the paint, just trying to get everything a uniform, rust resistant finish... and there is a piece of tape over the breather above the rear cover plate.

Does that 55 lbs include the difference in weight of the carrier? That thing is more substantial too.

You can see the missing trunion springs in the pictures, hopefully Chris will get the parts out to me shortly so I can get this beast mounted back in the frame where it belongs. <grin>

I can't remember if the 'guts' were included in that or not. It's been too long.

The 1872 lives! I got it back together this weekend. As I was mounting the deck, i noticed that the engine was moving around a bit.

After further investigation, it turns out that there was NOT 1 bolt in the engine plate. 6 bolts, all missing. After lining the engine up and putting 6 bolts in the plate, and filling up the tank with gas, it mowed my 3 acres of grass like a dream. It could use a set of blades, and the hydro cam plate needs adjusting, but I'll get to that soon.

On the subject of supers in general, I drilled the mounting holes in the frame so I could use 1/4-20 self tapping hex head bolts to hold the tunnel cover on. The usual #12 hex head bolts were not available locally, and those need to stay tight.

The cover had been off, or without bolts, for so long that it stressed the lower power steering mounting bracket until it broke in two at the first bend from the frame. That's a thick bracket, I suspect it had to be repetitive stress that cracked/broke it that way. It was TONS of fun pulling the column so I could get the bracket out and weld it back together properly.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
