This has been the nastiest piece to deal with, the "grease" is simply very fine dust bound by petrochemicals, the rust is crazy, everything needs a puller. W/O a doubt it would have worked for about 15 seconds before the big chain broke, it was welded with rust(still is even after soaking a week or better).
The NAPA number is #706612 for the 00 grease. I had to get the number off the interweb and press them to order it-they had no idea what is was or if they could get it.
So far $500 bux or so into it. Don't tell the wife.

Straightened the pulleys on the mule drive what came with the tractor, added new pulleys (one fully welded, one spot welded, same part#)added a bracket for these two lead weights from a Deutz-Allis greens mower. Beat on the cover til the flap was straight, and it now folds up properly 2x4s and 3lb shop hammer used, 1x4 to cushion the hammer smacks. Good enough, this is a worker. I will DA the topside of the cover and epoxy prime and paint, underside will remain POR15.

This is what was supposed to be lubricant inside the chain case. Serial number is 3130283U 12173-any way to tell how old?

I can't wait till I have to open my oldie. I drilled and tapped the case on it so that I could fill it with gear oil. So far it works. Yep it leaks but I'll just keep filling it. I figure a QT. of gear oil every year is cheap and easy.

This had no lubricant value left-must have been lithium base, it all washed away, fine dust/petrochemicals all that was left. Chunky. This had cracks letting water inside and left out in the rain of course-as long as I own it, it will be under cover.

Very nice job on the restoration of the tiller. I think every Cub owner needs to do one of these! They are nasty little buggers. But when in good shape they till pretty well.
Shouldn't have to rebuild it for another 50 years!
Regards,
Chris

I looks like the hardest part is getting the old bearings off the shafts. The 400 has bushings for the mid and lower shaft so they come apart pretty easy. Just messy.

Thanks, guys-everything has been tough to remove on this thing-I've been cutting most of the bearings off as I have new ones. The tines had only the races left, bearings were gone. If I can get the last set of tines off today, it will be going back together. I pulled the gearbox apart, it looks nice-as bad as the tiller was I decided to go thru it also-dang rear cover started leaking anyways since I installed the gearbox.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
