How do you know you got it flat within .1 MM?
No reason it shouldn't be perfectly flat. I mean, .1mm is .04". That's terrible. It won't hold a head gasket with that much warpage. I don't recall the spec, but it's likely only about .001"-.002". If you can't sand it any flatter than that, yeah, take it to a shop. Check the deck on the block too and make sure it's flat. |

Kohler head gasket kit instructions give .1mm spec (.004") with a feeler gauge on plate glass or other suitable surface (as a go-nogo indicator), so that's what I used. Looking at the service manual, .004" is for the next size up motor (25), the 23 is .003in. Might be slightly out of spec.

Time you get done dinking around with a problem engine, you could put Sam's
good used CORRECT engine in there and not ever worry about ay- dapter parts, bending pushin rods or rockin' arms again. ![]() . |

I was really thinking about getting that engine and meeting Sam. I'm taking a trip to TN next week. Between me and a friend i'm sure we could find a place for it. I see it's been sold. Mike

After I few successful mowings, I made it a quarter lap around the back yard yesterday when the Command started running very poorly, making a metallic tapping noise, and slobbering oil out of the cylinder opposite the one that normally drools. Barely made it back. Started OK today, but burning lots of oil. So the Command is going in the shed next to the original KT17 and for better or for worse, I've ordered a Predator 420cc HEMI plus some "stage 1" hop-up parts. I'll post details here as that swap progresses.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
