Make your own tap. Or at least a thread chaser.

Take a piece of threaded pipe the correct size. Using a cut off disk in a angle grinder, cut a series of lengthwise slots in the threads. about every half inch around the pipe would work.

Thread that into the cylinder and rotate, back it out, thread it in, etc. several times. You can use tapping fluid if you want.

One more step you can take with your new "tap" is to harden it. Heat it bright red and plunge it into water or oil. That will make the "tap" harder than the cast iron cylinder.

if you have a small wire brush to get in there it will help loosen the dirt and rust then use a vaccume to suck out the dirt.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Never thought of making a thread chaser with a piece of threaded pipe. Great suggestion. We suffered from extreme sticker shock when we priced a tap that big at McMaster Carr (about $150.00). We are looking at borrowing one and if that does not work out you can bet that we will be making one out of the pipe we have. The problem began years ago when the muffler only screwed in a few threads and we left it go. The threads are still there but carbon and rust are there also. So far we have gained about half the threads but it is slow going because we absolutely do not want to crack the block.

Well we got some new parts the other week so the progress continues.



And the rest of the parts keep getting grayer lol.



And I am slowly getting the threads cleaned out of the 10 horse.

I have been playing with the electrolysis on bigger parts and am very impressed. I did a rear fender on the 102 and the paint just came off in big sheets. It may take a day or two but even the nooks where no manner of tool will work very well come clean. A couple of minutes of cleanup and the part is ready for primer. I have the other fender in there now and as long as one has the time I highly recommend the process. I am going to try Eric's pressure washer on this fender to see if it will clean it up even quicker.
