I've got an 86 parts tractor, it and my 126 were saved from the crusher... literally, they were loaded up on a trailer bound for the scrap yard and I called the guy just in time, and he stopped at a truck stop where I could meet up with him and pull all the cub stuff off.

Mystro,
Wow thats a story you dont here often. I bet the Cubs breathed a sigh of relief!

Guys just heard that the 86 has a problem after Kevin pressed this into service plowing snow this past few weeks it has developed a leak at the crank seal behind the PTO Well I havent looked at it yet but assume this engine will need a rebuild and the seal will be part of that process. Wasnt looking forward to that but you never know when you buy one of these units. They are old and most have done a lot of work too. That little 8 hp will still do a lot of work.
So would you guys fill it with oil and run it or not?

Also said the carb was flooding while setting. I told him to find the shut off and just close that after each use. That is I assume it has a shut off. Not being close to the tractor I had not checked for sediment bowl and shut off.

Ahhh the trials and tribulations of owning a fleet of Cubs!

Hope things are good out there!
Regards,
Chris

Chris,

I guess if it were my Cub I would limp it along till spring, or till you have a good time to pull the engine and change the seal. It may be possible to change the seal without pulling the engine completely apart, just taking off the pulley and PTO. I have heard of this done with success but have never attempted it myself. I guess you mention that the tractor needs a rebuild? If so, then I would just go ahead and put it out of service and freshen it up. As far as the carb, that's good advice to give, even if it wasn't leaking.

Thanks,
Well the oil seal has completely come out of the engine. So This needs to be looked at soon! Not going to run it except for maybe loading and unloading to get it home. Wasn't sure if the seal can be snuck in there if the PTO is pulled?
Regards,
Chris

Quick 86 update;
I did get the new bearing for the PTO, a new teaser spring for the clutch and new roll pins, as the clutch is in need of repair someday soon. I don't like grinding gears!.
Also Kevin brought over a seat from a 1715 Cub and I made a adapter plate and mounted it on the 86. It is a different shape seat with a lower back but is in much better condition and I did not hurt the original seat springs, so a correct or new seat can be added if required. Sorry no pictures at this time.
Hope things are good out there in Cub land!
Zippy1, I have been thinking about you, hope it is better weather than the last time we spoke!
Regards,
Chris

Mr. Chris, weather is a lot better, up into the low teens now getting real sick of it.
Glad the 86 is coming along
Give me a call this week so I can tell you about my latest purchase.
Hint.. It's a 1966 and has two less tires than a tractor and a lot less hp

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
