Threw the engine together enough to get it in and wired. Some gas. Turned the key and..... Nothing. It turns over but two problems:
No spark No fuel Kinda basic huh. Haven't done much troubleshooting but the coil gets power. I'm going to tackle spark first. Wondering if the points are making contact but need to pull up a diagram and look. Another day. It's pretty easy to imagine a complete running tractor at this point (still an image, but I have a good imagination...). Sometimes when they are in so many pieces they never do go back together, but this one has turned the corner. |

Power to the coil. Tested the coil by making a jumper and shorting out the (-) side of the coil to ground. Still no spark. Low battery. Jumped the battery and spark with the shorting wire now but not the plug.
Cleaned the points. Spark. I dont have a picture, but there is a small square cover on top of the engine that the fuel goes into (and out of) before going to the carburetor. Pulled the top off this and crud city. Cleaned it up and got the 'valves' working again. This let fuel pass. Which also allowed it to start. Vroom! Yay! But it was surging bad. Pulled the carb and did some more cleaning and retried and still rough. It would require the choke part way closed to get it to run 'smooth' without surging. There is only one adjustment screw on it. So I had a different carb. This one has needles that I could remove for cleaning. Cleaned it up (a little) and put it on and runs great! ![]() Slapped the fender on, adjusted the brake and hydro linkage (actually did this before the fender went on), and took it for a drive around the yard. The new steering is remarkable. After a year and a half (or more?) I once again have a running driving tractor. Might put the blade on it and put it back in service for the Winter, or might pull the engine and clean it up. Of course those rims have to get the treatment, and some V61's on the front although I might leave chains on the back of this one. Maybe now I can clean up around the shop a bit and get rid of some pieces not needed. We will see... |

The carb in the washer is what came off it (left pic). I might try soaking in pinesol per the tips here.
The one that is on it now (right pic) has a long jet down from the top all the way through (on the first one that jet was fixed in place and I couldnt figure out how to remove it) I left this high speed turbine rotary atomization blade in there. ( ) Never seen one of those before.

In my roundabout way of doing things, put it all back together (minus the grill). This way all the little pieces and bits are accounted for (no small feat with me, I tend to forget lots).
Looks much better on the inside than it does on the outside, but later this Winter (or next Spring) will spiff those sheet metal parts and make them shiney (just a protective primer/spit coat on at the moment). Unless I get to it sooner. Hmm... maybe a decal set should be put on order as motivation. Tars. Definitely need some tars and clean up those rims! Then in the meantime it can run snow duty for a bit. Starts, runs, drives great and all the wear pieces on the chassis have been replaced. Time to clean up all the extra 'stuff' laying around the shop and sweep the floor (although sweeping might be going too far) |

Very Nice!!
I agree with the part about putting it back together to account for everything... We like to put them together, run them one season to make sure all the mechanicals are good and then take the sheet metal back off for paint. That way you don't have to go back and worry bout scratching paint if you need to work on something else! ![]()

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
