When buying used you just need to do your do diligence. Find what you think is the nicest truck available in your price range and inspect it thoroughly. I really would look for nice 3/4 ton truck used for the extra robustness and capability. After the initial depreciation, the heavy duty trucks become more reasonable used.

As far as brand arguments, I really think today they are moot. Each manufacturer has the ability to produce quality vehicles along with a few lemons thrown in. Overall I think quality across all makes is much improved.

I have owned many trucks. All were bought new and maintained according to all manufacturer schedules. Some were better than others.

93 S-10... Good truck. 4.3 with a 5 speed was a little rocket. No issues.
96 Silverado... First time I used 4wd the transfer case went. Defective and replaced under warranty.
98 S-10... See the 93 above. Same configuration. No issues.
01 Tacoma... Horrible truck. Electronic issues. Starting issues. O2 sensor replacements repeatedly. Toyota, oh what a feeling? Yes, anger.
06 Frontier... Best mid size truck I owned. Wonderful engine on a sturdy frame. No issues.
11 Silverado... Good truck. No issues. Should have kept it.
14 Silverado...Loved the new body style and had to have one. Never buy the first year of a restyle. Paint was defective and started coming off in flakes. Ended up in a buy back with GM.
15 Silverado... Current truck. So far no issues and the paint is staying on.

That's my vehicle history. I hope you find some of that info useful.

Now more importantly, what guitars do you have? I have been known to do a little pickin' and grinin' on Les Paul that lurks in my closet.

B you really gonna ask about guitars on a Cub Cadet forum ?
Unfortunately even though my daughter has made advanced rounds in both American idol and the Voice and is currently competing in amateur night at the Apollo in Harlem, I am the least musical person on the planet. I have often wondered how musically inclined the UPS guy is.

Well, if you get me talking about guitars, I could go on all night. That is the one thing I know the most about. 17 guitars, a banjo and a bass have taken over the house around here. On Monday of this week, my custom order G&L Legacy came in ... strangely on the 25th anniversary of the day Leo Fender passed away. I still have my original 1st guitar, a '75 Stratocaster that my parents bought for me, a '71 Telecaster, a '77 Gibson Les Paul that got new frets last year, several Martin acoustics, and others. Some cool Marshall and Fender tube amps. I played in bands for 20 solid years, until it damaged my hearing. Bsmith, what year is that Les Paul in your closet?

Tim, buying a truck in CA and driving 66 on the way back sounds great. I'm even thinking of looking for something in FL or TX and flying there and then driving back. As mentioned above, pretty much the same price for something that's never been exposed to road salt. This truck is likely going to be the most expensive vehicle I've ever purchased, so that's why I'm doing my homework. I'm fairly certain that the guy who looked at mine tonight is going to buy it this weekend, so next week the search may be on. As for brands, I agree ... it's all about finding something that's been well taken care of, and there are good ones and bad ones with any brand, but I'm most likely going to stay with GM.

Speaking of Cinderella. My friend in Philadelphia is in the recording studio equipment business, and knows Cinderella lead singer Tom Keifer very well, and I got to meet him at my friend's wedding around 30 years ago. He sat behind us in the church, then at the reception I walked right over and sat down at his table and started talking guitars, as he is a collector too. He's a very nice guy.

Drcjv ... that's great about your daughter! She must be very talented.

64fleetside ... way to cover it all in a short post. Right on.

As for my CC Quietline 1000, last week I took the snow blade off, greased my deck, and got it ready to go for grass season.

so jon i put a pic of my truck in the cub hauler thread it is 30 yrs old....its an 84 chevy k30 single rear wheel.. built and rebuilt: dana60 kingpin front, sm465 trans np205 tcase and 14boltff10.5" in the rear... even has hydroboost and its not a diesel...aluminum transfer cases work well in a diesel, as it is a different type of power...but in the truck pulling world, if you run a hopped up BB gasser it will blow that aluminum trans to pieces....diesel is a push... gas/alcohol is an explosion...my neighbor has won nationals in a modified truck called "foolish farmer"...and my good friend used to build the engines for them...and ive never driven a mack truck..ive bent a 7/8" clevis pulling trees out of my yard with mine...most trucks nowadays could not do that...its what you know....

but like you said opinions are like.... i dont care about bluetooth and power windows..i like to throw levers and get out to lock my hubs in, hell i dont even have any carpet in my truck..but i can carry 2.5 tons of 3/4 stone if i need to, or pull trees out of the ground or a big f'n trailer...rides like a hay wagon too..if i didnt want that though i would buy a CAR...just me

OK guys I think 3 pages about what brand of pickup to buy is a bit much. This thread has totally fallen off the track.

Edit: If you guys have more useful for the OP be my guest.

Really SamMac? I thought we could talk about anything in the general section. I'm enjoying the experiences that some knowledgeable folks are sharing. I've gotten some good info, and a couple guys even PM'd me. They must like talking about it too. There will always be the "mine's better than yours" comments. That doesn't bother me in the slightest. I'm sorry if I started a conversation that is a problem for the forum rules?? And, I'm still showing as being on page 2.

I think when it comes to buying older vehicles is to focus on the condition of the vehicle rather than focus on which make is better. After all, the OP is looking for used vehicles 10 or more years old. The condition of the vehicle will usually show how much the previous owners took care of it. And if the seller has records of vehicle maintenance, that's great. Having said that, any older vehicles good or better condition selling at a good price should be just fine regardless the brand because it made it that far in age!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
